Beaches in Cinque Terre: A Local’s Guide to Where to Swim in 2026
Which beaches are actually good for swimming in Cinque Terre?
The truth? Cinque Terre is cliffs and vines, not sand and waves. Only Monterosso has a proper sandy beach that stretches about 300 meters. Everywhere else is small pebbly coves or concrete lidos. But that doesn’t mean you can’t swim well. You just need to know where to drop your towel.
Summer 2026: water temperatures sit at 24, 26°C from June through September. The Ligurian Sea is calm most mornings. By 11am the wind picks up and small boats crowd the bays. Swim before 10am or after 5pm for the best experience.
Is the beach free or do you have to pay?
Monterosso has a free section on the east end near the statue of Neptune. The west end is all private lidos. A daybed and umbrella at Bagno Gilda costs 28 EUR on weekdays, 32 EUR on weekends. That includes a locker and shower. Beach only (no bed) is 10 EUR. The free section is packed by 9am in July. Bring your own shade or rent a tiny patch of sand for 5 EUR from the informal vendors who walk the beach, they’re legit but ask for a receipt.
Corniglia’s beach (Guvano) is free but requires a 386-step staircase down from the train station. No services. No shade. Bring water and a hat. It’s a nudist spot on the left side. Families stay to the right. It’s never as crowded as Monterosso because of the walk.
How do you reach the beaches without dying on the stairs?
| Beach | Access Time from Train Station | Type | Price | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monterosso Fegina | 2 minutes flat walk | Sandy free + paid lidos | Free or 10, 32 EUR | Best all-rounder. Go on a weekday. |
| Vernazza harbor | 5 minutes, steep ramp | Tiny pebble cove | Free | Swim only. No lounging. Water too deep for kids. |
| Corniglia Guvano | 15 minutes down 386 steps | Pebble + rocks | Free | Best for privacy. Hard return climb. |
| Manarola | 10 minutes down path | Concrete lido + rocks | Free lido, no shade | Good for a quick dip. Slippery. |
| Riomaggiore | 3 minutes down main street | Small pebble | Free | Avoid in July. 200 people on a 40-meter strip. |
When do the beaches get impossible? (And how to beat the crowds)
July and August: Monterosso reaches capacity by 10am. The free section has 30 people per 10 square meters. The lidos sell out by 9:30am. Vernazza’s harbor becomes a human sardine can from 11am to 4pm. The cruise ship crowd arrives between 10am and 2pm. They leave by 3pm.
My trick: go to Monterosso at 7am. The water is glassy. The sun is hot by 8:30. You get a good 3 hours before the chaos. Or go at 5pm and stay until sunset at 8:45pm. The light on the pastel houses is better anyway.
What should you really bring? (Don’t forget the shoes)
Water shoes are non negotiable. Every beach except Monterosso has sharp rocks. The pebbles at Corniglia feel like walking on golf balls. I’ve seen tourists cry. Buy a pair at Decathlon in La Spezia for 9.99 EUR. Or pay 25 EUR at the kiosk in Monterosso. Bring a dry bag. The ferries splash you. A rash guard for sun protection is smart because shade is rare. Sunscreen costs 18 EUR at the beach shop. Bring your own.
Which beach would a local choose on a hot Sunday in August?
Skip Cinque Terre entirely on a Sunday in August. The crowds are insane. Take the train 20 minutes east to Levanto. That beach is 1.5 km of sand. Free entry. Paid lidos at 18 EUR. Half the people. Or go west to Framura, a 12-minute train ride. There’s a free beach called Spiaggia di Bonassola that is wide, clean, and never packed. Cinque Terre is beautiful but the beaches are not the reason to come in peak summer.
Practical warning: the staircase at Corniglia
The 386 steps down to Guvano beach are steep and uneven. No handrail for the last 100 steps. In July 2025 a tourist broke her ankle. The walk back up in 30°C heat is brutal. Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person. There is no bar. No toilets. No rescue service. If you have knee problems or small children, skip this one.
One more thing about the ferries
Ferries between the villages stop at Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. They do not stop at Corniglia. If you want to beach hop, buy a day pass for 35 EUR from the ticket office at Monterosso port. The ferry lets you jump off at each village’s beach. You can swim off the boat in deep water if the captain stops, some do, some don’t. Ask before boarding.
Summary for 2026
Monterosso is your safe choice. Corniglia is your adventure. Vernazza and Manarola are for quick dips. Riomaggiore is a skip in high season. Go early. Bring water shoes. And remember: the real beach magic in Cinque Terre happens at 7am or 6pm, not between 11 and 3.
