Italy in August

Our honest guide to Italy in August 2026. Heat, prices, Ferragosto closures, and what to skip. Independent advice from a local.

In short
August is Italy's hottest, most crowded and most expensive month. If you can, skip it for May, June or September. If you must go, head to the Alps or lakes, book everything months ahead, and accept that many shops and restaurants close for the Ferragosto week (August 15).
Curated by Joan SanzUpdated:

I have lived in Italy for over a decade. August is the month I usually leave.

Why? Because half the country shuts down for Ferragosto (August 15), the heat can hit 40°C in Rome and Florence, and prices for flights and hotels double. The coast is a wall of towels. The cities are a wall of selfie sticks.

But not all of August is a disaster. The first ten days are manageable. The last week, when Italians go back to work, is calmer. The dead zone is August 10 to 20. Plan around that.

What actually happens in August 2026

Rome, Florence and Venice pack 3 to 4 times more people than in April. The Uffizi queues snake for 90 minutes in direct sun. Pompeii hits 38°C by 11 a.m. You will pay 250 to 400 EUR per night for a basic double room in central Florence. A pizza that cost 12 EUR in June costs 18 EUR in August.

Skip the art cities. Drive north instead. The Dolomites and the lakes (Garda, Como, Maggiore) keep their charm. Lake Garda water sits at 24°C. The air is 10 degrees cooler than in Rome. Trains from Milan to Trento run every hour.

Ferragosto reality check

On August 15, Rome goes quiet. Most museums and churches open in the morning only. Many family-run trattorias close for 5 to 10 days straight. If you want to eat well, stick to hotel restaurants or tourist streets. They stay open but charge a premium.

My advice

If you have no choice and come in August, book accommodation by February 2026. If you left it late, change your destination to Turin, Bologna or the alpine valleys. Those places have real life, real prices and real shade.

Do not book a rental car at the last minute. They cost 180 EUR per day in August if available at all. Take trains instead. Italo and Frecciarossa run on schedule even on Ferragosto.

One final warning: the mosquitos. August evenings near any water bring them. Bring repellent with DEET. The Italian pharmacy stuff is expensive and weak.

Frequently asked questions

Is August a bad time to visit Italy?
For most people, yes. Extreme heat, high prices and Ferragosto closures make it the hardest month. Exceptions are the Alps, lakes and northern mountains.
Do museums close all of August?
No. Major museums like the Uffizi and Vatican Museums stay open with reduced hours around Ferragosto (Aug 15). Smaller local museums may close for 1 or 2 weeks.
Can I swim in the sea in August?
Yes. Water temps along the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian coast reach 26-28°C. The problem is the packed beaches. Book a lido (private beach) in advance.
What is Ferragosto exactly?
It is August 15, a public holiday. Many Italians take the whole week off. Roads, trains and airports get busy. Expect closed shops and limited services from Aug 10 to 20.
