Italy in November

Is November a good time to visit Italy? Lower prices, fewer tourists, but many coastal towns shut down. Practical guide for 2026.

In short
Yes, November is a good time if you want low prices and near-empty museums. The catch is weather: expect rain, cold (8, 15°C), and shorter days. Many beach resorts close entirely. Stick to cities like Rome, Florence, or Naples. Avoid the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre unless you like closed hotels and fog.
Curated by Joan SanzUpdated:

I have lived in Italy for over a decade. November is my favorite month for visiting museums. The Vatican Museums have a 20-minute queue instead of two hours. Hotel rates in Rome drop to 80, 120 EUR per night for a solid 4-star. But you need to pack a good waterproof jacket.

The November Reality

Many tourists do not realise how dramatically Italy changes after October 31. On November 1 (Ognissanti, a national holiday) most shops and museums close or run reduced hours. After that, coastal ferries stop. The last ferry to Capri often runs in late October. If you want beach weather, skip Italy in November.

What stays open

  • Major museums: Uffizi, Accademia, Borghese, Vatican Museums. All open but close earlier (last entry around 16:30 or 17:00).
  • Restaurants in city centres: open as usual, but many seaside places shut until March.
  • Public transport: normal schedules, except for strikes (check local news).

Events and Food

Truffle season peaks in Alba and San Miniato. Go to a local sagra (food festival) in Piedmont or Tuscany. Skip the expensive tourist truffle shops in Florence. Drive to San Miniato for the November truffle fair (dates vary, check 2026 calendar).

Wine: many wineries run harvest-related events in early November. The Vino Novello (young wine) is released on November 6. Buy it at any enoteca for 5, 8 EUR. It is a fun, rough red.

The Big Warning

Venice floods (acqua alta) happen mostly in November. Check the tide forecast daily. Buy rubber boots from a local hardware store for 15 EUR instead of the 30 EUR tourist versions. If the tide exceeds 110 cm, St. Mark's Square closes. That is normal. Do not panic.

A Personal Recommendation

Skip the crowded Christmas markets that start in late November. They are overpriced. Instead, go to Bologna for the street food, tortellini in brodo at a trattoria costs 12 EUR and warms you properly.
