Italy in Autumn

Plan your Italy autumn trip: October to November weather, harvest festivals, lower prices, and where to skip the rain. Practical tips from a local.

In short
Yes, autumn is the best season for Italy: mild weather, far fewer tourists, and lower prices than summer. October is still warm in the south (20, 24°C), while November brings rain and fog to the north. Skip the crowded Amalfi Coast after September, instead head to Tuscany for truffle season or Sicily for olive harvest.
Curated by Joan SanzUpdated:

Italy in autumn is a smart bet. The crowds thin out after September, hotel rates drop by 30, 50%, and the light turns golden over the vineyards. You can walk into the Uffizi in Florence with a same-day ticket (reserve online anyway, wait time drops to 10 minutes vs. 90 minutes in July).

What to Expect: Weather, Prices & Crowds

October is the sweet spot. Rome and Florence: 18, 22°C, mostly sunny. Venice gets acqua alta (high water) from October onwards, so skip St. Mark’s Square after heavy rain, bring rubber boots. November in the Alps is dead: many mountain huts close, cable cars run reduced hours. Sicily stays warm (17, 20°C) and dry into early November.

DestinationOctober Temp (°C)November Temp (°C)Avg Hotel Night (Oct)Crowd Level (Oct)
Rome18, 2212, 16€120Medium
Florence16, 2010, 14€110Medium
Venice14, 188, 12€150Low
Sicily (Palermo)20, 2416, 20€80Low

Prices for flights from the US to Rome drop to €450, 550 round-trip in October (compared to €800+ in August).

Where to Go and What to Skip

Skip the Cinque Terre after October 15. The hiking trails close for mudslide risk, and many restaurants shut until Easter. Do the Dolomites in early October instead: the larch trees turn gold, cable cars run until early November, and a three-course lunch costs €25 versus €40 in peak summer.

For food, head to Alba (Piedmont) for the White Truffle Fair, 10 October, 22 November 2026. A gram costs €6, 10, but the smell is worth every cent. Avoid the overpriced tourist stalls at the fair entrance, walk 200 meters into the side streets for real prices.

Venice in November is quiet and foggy. The Biennale art show (through end of November) is still open, hotel rooms go for €90 a night, and you can ride a gondola at 5 PM with zero queue. Just check the tide forecast (https://www.comune.venezia.it/marea) before you book.

Practical Tips

Buses and trains run on a reduced winter schedule from November 1. For regional trains in Tuscany, check the updated timetable on Trenitalia 48 hours before. Many small museums in hill towns (San Gimignano, Montepulciano) close at 5:30 PM instead of 7:00 PM. Arrive before 3 PM to avoid rushing.

Scams to watch: in Rome, the "free rose" trick still happens near the Spanish Steps. Just say "no" and keep walking. The Colosseum queue in autumn is 20, 30 minutes, still book online to skip it.

Car rental is cheaper (€35, 50/day) but watch for limited Sunday hours at smaller gas stations in the countryside.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Italy in autumn?
October is the best month overall. Weather is warm in the south, crowds are low, and harvest festivals are in full swing. November is better for bargain hunters but expect rain in the north and shorter opening hours everywhere.
Is autumn a good time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
Not after mid-September. Many hotels close by October 15, ferries run reduced schedules, and the water is too cold for swimming (18°C). Choose Sicily or the Salento peninsula (Lecce) instead for November beach walks.
What should I pack for Italy in autumn?
Layers are key. A waterproof jacket, a light sweater, comfortable walking shoes, and an umbrella. For evenings in November, bring a medium-weight coat. In Sicily, you can get by with a jacket and a scarf.
Are there any special events in autumn 2026?
Yes, the White Truffle Fair in Alba runs 10 October to 22 November. The Venice Biennale continues through late November. Also the Rome Marathon is on 18 October 2027 (registration opens spring 2027).
