Italy in March

Should you visit Italy in March 2026? Quick answer, weather table, events, and honest tips. Independent travel guide by a long-time resident.

In short
March is a smart shoulder month for Italy. Crowds are thin, prices are 20-30% lower than peak summer, and major sites are open. The catch is weather: expect 8-15°C, rain in cities, and snow in the Alps. You trade sunny beach days for emptier museums and cheaper flights. Do Italy in March if you prefer quiet culture over beach lounging. Skip it if 15°C drizzle sounds miserable.

Weather: Pack Layers, Not Tanks

Northern Italy (Milan, Venice, Turin) stays cold. Think 5-12°C, persistent drizzle, and gray skies. Venice floods happen less but a March acqua alta (high water) can still hit. Pack rubber boots or at least waterproof shoes. Central Italy (Rome, Florence, Tuscany) is milder but unpredictable. One day is 18°C and sunny. The next can be 8°C and horizontal rain. Southern Italy (Naples, Sicily) is warmer by 3-4°C but still not beach weather. The Amalfi Coast feels empty. That is fine because you do not want to be there in rain anyway. Do Pompeii in March. The crowds are light and the site is huge.

What Is Open and What to Skip

Everything major is open: Vatican Museums, Uffizi, Colosseum, Pompeii. Hours are shorter than summer but still 8.30am to 6.30pm or 7pm. The key problem: many smaller coastal restaurants and hotels close for winter until April. Check ahead in Cinque Terre or Amalfi. Alpine ski resorts run through late March. Try Cervinia or Bormio. Skip the beaches entirely. They are empty and the water is 14°C.

Events Worth Your Time

Carnevale in Venice ends in February in 2026 (Fat Tuesday is February 17). So no masks in March. Instead hit the Festa di San Giuseppe (March 19) in Sicily. Palermo holds street feasts with fried dough and zeppole. Rome has the same date with Vatican ceremonies. Saint Patrick's Day (March 17) is big in Rome too. The Irish pub scene goes wild. Not authentic Italian but fun.

Should You Come?

Yes if you want cheap flights and empty museums. No if you need sun and swimming. March is the most underrated month for big cities and ruins. Just bring an umbrella and a coat. You will thank me.

Frequently asked questions

Is March a good time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
No. Half the hotels and restaurants are closed until April. The weather is 12-15°C with rain. The ferries run limited schedules. Pick Naples or Pompeii instead.
Will the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel be crowded in March?
Far less than in summer. You can walk in without a prebooked ticket at 9am and wait 10-15 minutes. By 11am it gets busier but still manageable.
What should I pack for Italy in March?
A waterproof jacket, layers (sweater, scarf), comfortable walking shoes that can handle puddles, and an umbrella. One nice outfit for dinner. Leave shorts and flip-flops at home.
Are there any major Italian holidays in March 2026?
Saint Joseph's Day (March 19) is a public holiday in many regions. Banks and some museums close or have reduced hours. Easter is April 5 in 2026, so March is pre-Easter quiet.
