Open answer-first: July in Italy is not for everyone. It is the hottest and busiest month. If you can tolerate crowds and heat, you get long daylight hours, open-air opera, and festivals like the Palio di Siena. The key is strategy: book everything in advance, start your days at 7 a.m., and rest from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Weather and What to Wear
Rome and Florence hit 35, 38°C most afternoons. The coast is a few degrees cooler but more humid. The Dolomites sit at a pleasant 22, 25°C. Pack linen, a wide hat, reusable water bottle (fill at public fountains called nasoni), and a light scarf for church shoulders. Air conditioning is common in hotels and shops but weak in some budget places.
Crowds and Prices
| Destination | Avg Temp (°C) | Crowd Level (1, 5) | Double Room (mid-range, EUR) | Queue at main sight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rome | 36 | 5 | 220 | 70 min at Colosseum |
| Florence | 37 | 5 | 200 | 60 min at Uffizi |
| Cinque Terre | 31 | 4 | 180 | 30 min at trail entrance |
| Dolomites | 24 | 3 | 150 | none |
| Amalfi Coast | 33 | 5 | 280 | 45 min for bus to Positano |
Book all major museums two weeks ahead. The Uffizi gallery sells out by 10 a.m. daily. Skip the Capri Blue Grotto in July: the queue for a rowboat is 2+ hours. Do a private boat tour from Sorrento instead.
Events and Local Life
The Palio di Siena horse race is July 2 and August 16. Arrive by 11 a.m. for a spot in the square. Trastevere in Rome has outdoor concerts every evening. In Bolzano, the summer classical music festival runs all month. Ferragosto (August 15) is a national holiday, so many Italians vacation in the second half of July. Cities get emptier after 8 p.m., when everyone is at an outdoor table eating gelato.
Is It Worth It?
If you love heat and energy, yes. If you dislike saunas and selfie sticks, come in September or late May. July is fantastic for the Alps and the lakes. Como and Garda are warm but manageable. Avoid Venice unless you have a private boat: the main streets feel like a cattle pen. My opinion: skip Florence in July, do the Dolomites for a week, then finish on the Sicilian coast where sea breezes save you.
