Italy in Spring

Spring in Italy: weather, prices, crowds, and where to go in 2026. Skip the Amalfi crowds in April. Do Tuscany and Puglia instead.

In short
Spring in Italy means mild weather, fewer crowds than summer, and lower prices from March through May. Expect 15, 25°C, blooming countryside, and shorter queues at the Uffizi and Colosseum. Avoid the Amalfi Coast until May and skip Venice on Easter weekend unless you book months ahead.
Curated by Joan SanzUpdated:

Spring in Italy is the sweet spot. The sun is warm but not punishing. Flowers are out. Tourists haven't yet flooded the narrow streets of Florence or the hills of Cinque Terre. You get blue skies and green hills without the August sweat or the November drizzle.

But spring 2026 has quirks. Easter falls on April 5, which means a mad crush in Rome, Florence, and Venice from April 3 to 7. Book trains and hotels by February if you plan to be in those cities. Otherwise, head south. Puglia in April is quiet, cheap, and full of almond blossoms. Sicily in March is still cool but empty.

May16, 2554

March is coat weather in Milan, jacket weather in Rome, t-shirt weather in Palermo. Rain is possible anywhere but usually short. May is glorious everywhere, but prices jump by 30, 40% compared to March.

Where to Go and What to Skip

Skip the Amalfi Coast until mid-May. In March and April many hotels are closed, ferries run limited schedules, and the water is too cold for swimming. Do the lakes instead. Lake Garda in April is peaceful, the lemon trees are in bloom, and you can hike without queueing for parking.

Skip the Uffizi on any Saturday in May. Go on a Tuesday morning. Book your Colosseum ticket three weeks out for April and May. For the Venice Biennale (runs April to November 2026), book transport and lodging five months ahead. The city will be packed with art lovers.

Do a road trip through Umbria and Le Marche in late April. Drive from Spoleto to Urbino. Stay in agriturismi for 60, 90 EUR a night. Eat truffles in Norcia. You will see almost no other tourists.

Practical Tips

Bring layers. A light jacket and a scarf work for chilly evenings even in May. Sunscreen is smart from mid-April onward. Train strikes happen on random Fridays and Sundays. Check Trenitalia or Italo the night before. Reserve high-speed trains for April and May, especially on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings.

Frequently asked questions

Is March too cold for Italy?
Not too cold for Rome, Florence, or the south. Milan and the lakes can be chilly, around 10, 14°C. Pack a jacket and a sweater. Snow is rare except in the Alps.
When do spring flowers peak in Tuscany?
Late April to early May. The Val d'Orcia is covered in bright green wheat and red poppies. By late May the wheat turns golden, which is also beautiful but different.
Should I book everything in advance for spring 2026?
Yes for Easter week and May. For March and early April you can book trains and most hotels 3, 4 weeks ahead. But skip the line tickets to major museums should be booked 2, 3 weeks out regardless.
Are there any spring food festivals worth planning around?
The Sagra del Carciofo (artichoke festival) in Ladispoli near Rome happens in April. The white truffle fairs end in winter, but spring has wild asparagus and fava beans. Look for local sagre in small towns on weekends.
