Italy in Summer

Summer in Italy is hot, crowded, and expensive. Here is exactly what to expect in 2026: weather, prices, the best places to go, and the ones to skip.

In short
Summer in Italy means 35°C heat, wall-to-wall crowds, and hotel rates double those of spring. Go to the lakes or mountains instead of Rome in August. Book everything by March. This page covers what the season is really like and how to survive it.
Curated by Joan SanzUpdated:

Summer in Italy is a test of stamina. From June through August, the sun beats down, the piazzas swell with people, and prices hit their peak. But this is also the season of open-air opera, late-night gelato, and swimming in the sea after a hike. The trick is knowing where to be and when.

What Summer Is Actually Like

Expect heat. In Rome and Florence, July afternoons hit 35°C to 38°C. The air gets thick. Siestas are not a myth: from 1 PM to 4 PM, many small shops close. Do your sightseeing at 7 AM or after 7 PM. The queues for the Colosseum and Uffizi can reach 90 minutes even with a pre-booked ticket. Skip the Vatican on a Saturday in August. Go to the quieter Archaeological Museum of Naples instead.

Rain is rare but possible. Northern Italy gets the occasional afternoon thunderstorm. The south stays dry. Mosquitoes are aggressive at dusk. Bring repellent.

Where to Go and What to Avoid

Avoid Rome, Florence, Venice, and Cinque Terre from July 15 to August 31 unless you thrive in chaos. Go to the Italian Lakes: Lake Garda, Lake Como, Lake Maggiore. The water stays around 24°C. The mountains of Trentino-Alto Adige offer hiking and air that is 10°C cooler. For beaches, skip Rimini (packed, expensive umbrellas at 35 EUR a day). Head to Sardinia's Costa Verde or Puglia's Torre Guaceto reserve where a sunbed costs 15 EUR.

Bolzano28°CLow140 EUR/night8 EUR
Sardinia (Cagliari)32°CHigh (beaches)190 EUR/night9 EUR

Ferragosto (August 15) is a national holiday. Everything closes. Cities become ghost towns. Beaches are sardine cans. Plan around it.

Practical Reality Check

Public transport runs on a reduced summer schedule. Trains from Rome to Naples cost 45 EUR for a high-speed ticket booked a week ahead or 29 EUR if you book two months early. Air conditioning on regional trains is unreliable. Carry water. Fill up at the free public fountains with a reusable bottle. Self-service laundry costs 6 EUR in most cities. Most museums offer a "cooler" late-night opening on Fridays until 10 PM. Use those.

Scams increase with the heat. The rose sellers and petition scammers target hot, tired tourists. Say no firmly and keep walking. Do not let anyone put a bracelet on your wrist.

Prices are at their highest. A basic pizza margherita in a tourist zone costs 12 EUR. Walk three streets away and it is 7 EUR. Same for gelato: 2.50 EUR for a small cone away from the piazza, 5 EUR near it.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too hot to visit Italy in August 2026?
For Rome, Florence, and the south it will be uncomfortably hot with highs above 35°C. The lakes and Alps are much cooler. If you go south, shift your day to early mornings and evenings.
What is the cheapest month for summer travel to Italy?
June. Prices are still moderate, crowds are lower, and the weather is warm but not scorching (around 28°C in central Italy). August is the most expensive month.
Do I need to book everything in advance for summer 2026?
Yes. Hotels in popular areas sell out by April. Train tickets cost double if bought on the day. Book major museums at least three weeks ahead.
Are there any beaches in Italy that are not crowded in August?
Yes, but you have to walk. The beach at Cala dei Sospiri in Puglia requires a 20 minute walk from the parking lot. Sardinia's Cala Cipolla is quieter than the famous Costa Smeralda. Expect fewer services.
