Italy in September

Is September the best month for Italy? Yes. Warm seas, thinner crowds, lower prices. Our independent guide covers weather, events & costs.

In short
Yes, September is Italy's best travel month. Days are warm (25, 30°C), crowds thin after August, and prices drop 20, 40%. The sea is swimmable, harvest festivals begin, and major sights stay open. Book accommodation early for the first two weeks when Italians are still on holiday.
Curated by Joan SanzUpdated:

Italy in September is a masterstroke. Three years of living here taught me that. The blistering August heat breaks, the tourist tide recedes, and the country exhales. You get 25, 30°C days, 18, 22°C evenings, and water that still feels like a bath. Skip the Amalfi Coast in July. Come in September instead.

What you actually get: Weather, crowds, costs

Rome and Florence are still busy the first week but empty fast after the 10th. Venice? Calm by mid-month. The sea along Puglia and Sicily stays warm into October. Prices for flights and hotels drop 30, 40% after the first week. A central Rome hotel that costs €320 in August goes for €180 in late September. Dinner reservations? Easy.

Events that actually matter

Palio di Siena? It's in August. Skip. Instead target the Sagra dell'Uva in Marino (grape festival, first Sunday) or the Regata Storica in Venice (first Sunday). For food, the Alba White Truffle Fair starts in October, but September means porcini mushrooms and sagre (local food festivals) everywhere. Check the local Sagra calendar for where you are. Expect €15, €20 for a full meal at these village festivals.

Practical warnings

Book trains in advance for the first week. Biglietto last-minute on a Frecciarossa from Milan to Rome can cost €70 instead of €39. Many beach towns go half-shut after the 20th, so confirm your lido (beach club) is still running. The mosquitoes are still out at dusk in the Po Valley and Tuscany. Pack repellent.

My honest take: the second half of September is the sweet spot. Fewer people, cheaper beds, and the light turns golden over the vineyards. You can walk into the Uffizi without a pre-booked slot on a Tuesday afternoon. Don't tell everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Is September too late for swimming in Italy?
Not at all. Sea temperatures in Sicily, Puglia, and Sardinia stay around 24, 25°C through September. The Adriatic side cools a bit faster but is fine until the last week.
Do I need to book accommodation far in advance for September 2026?
For the first two weeks, yes. Many Italians still holiday then. After the 15th you can book a week ahead. But popular spots like Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast benefit from 2, 3 months lead time.
What is the weather like in the Italian Alps and Dolomites in September?
Crisp and clear. Days are 18, 22°C, nights drop to 8, 12°C. Great for hiking. Many cable cars close after mid-September, so check dates early.
Are museums and restaurants open normally in September?
Yes. Everything is open. The only exception is a few family-run trattorias in seaside towns that close the last week of September. City restaurants run full schedule.
