Verona

Verona landmarks guide with real prices, skip-the-queue tricks, and honest opinions. Arena, Juliet's House, Castelvecchio and more for 2026.

In short
Verona’s monuments are compact but ticket prices rise every year. Arena and Castelvecchio are worth full price. Juliet’s House is a tourist trap best seen from outside. Buy Arena and museum combo tickets online to skip 20 minute queues. The Roman Theatre offers better value than most expect. Avoid visiting on Monday afternoons when several sites close early.
Local tip
Buy the Verona Card (€25 for 24h or €35 for 48h) at the tourist office in Piazza Bra. It covers Arena, Castelvecchio, Roman Theatre, and Torre dei Lamberti. You skip the ticket queue at each site. Do the math: two major sites plus one tower already pay for the 24h card.

Verona Monuments & Landmarks: Honest Guide for 2026

Prices, opening hours and transport change often in Italy. Everything here is indicative guidance from an independent editor, not official information. Verify anything critical with the official venue before you go.

Which ones are worth your time and money?

Verona packs a lot into a small historic center. The Arena di Verona is the real deal. It is the third largest Roman amphitheater still standing. Entrance costs €10 for the Arena alone or €15 for the Arena plus one other museum. You can buy online at ticketone.it. Avoid the ticket line by buying online or using the Verona Card. The queue at the south entrance moves fast but can hit 20 minutes on summer weekends. Go early at 8:30 am or late after 5 pm. The acoustics are terrible for concerts but the structure itself is magnificent. Skip the guided audio tour. The signs are clear enough.

Is Juliet’s House worth visiting?

No. The courtyard is free. The statue and graffiti are outside. The house interior costs €6 and contains fake props and bad lighting. The queue for the balcony photo can take 40 minutes in summer. I tell friends to look at the courtyard for five minutes then leave. The real story is that Shakespeare never came to Verona. The balcony was added in the 20th century. There are better real medieval houses nearby. Try Casa di Giulietta from the outside only. The gift shop is overpriced.

How much time do you need at Castelvecchio?

Two hours minimum. Castelvecchio is a 14th century fortress turned museum. It costs €9. The museum collection includes Veronese paintings, medieval sculptures, and weapons. The bridge behind the castle is free and offers the best river view in town. The museum closes at 7 pm. Last entry is 6:30 pm. Mondays it opens at 1:30 pm instead of 8:30 am. Plan around that. The castle moat and red brick walls are more photogenic at sunset.

What about the Roman Theatre and Ponte Pietra?

The Roman Theatre costs €6. The site is smaller than the Arena but has a better view. It is carved into the hillside. You can climb to the top for a panorama of the river and rooftops. The archaeological museum inside is dry but the setting is not. Combine it with a walk across Ponte Pietra. That Roman bridge is free. It links the theatre to the old town. The walk takes 10 minutes. Best light for photos is early morning.

Which towers give the best view?

Torre dei Lamberti is the winner. It is in Piazza delle Erbe. The elevator costs €8. The stairs cost €5. Take the elevator if you are short on time. The stairs are 368 steps but save €3. The view covers the entire city and the hills beyond. Open until 9 pm in summer. Sunset slot is crowded. Go 30 minutes before closing. Torre del Gardello is nearby but closed to the public. Skip it.

Practical warning for 2026

Watch for the fake ticket sellers outside the Arena. They wear red vests and offer “discounted” tickets. They charge €15 for Arena entry that costs €10. Real ticket booths are inside the archway. Do not buy from street sellers. Also, the Arena closes for concerts in June and July. Check the schedule on arena.it. If a concert is on, you cannot visit until after 11 am. The Roman Theatre has steep steps. Wear good shoes. No wheelchair access to the top seating.
