Practical guide to day trips from Catania, Palermo & Taormina. Real train/bus times, fares, and honest verdicts from a local. Skip the tourist traps.

In short
The best day trips from Catania or Palermo are Syracuse (1h train, €9), Taormina (40min train, €5), Cefalù (50min train, €8), and the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento (2h bus, €12). Each is easy as a solo trip, but avoid Siracusa on Monday (museums closed) and book Agrigento bus in July. Most trains run hourly. I have done all of them dozens of times.
Local tip
For Taormina, take the first train from Catania at 5:53 (€4.90). You avoid the cruise-ship crowds until 10:30. The bus from Taormina station up to the town costs €2.50 cash only. Skip the cable car in summer, it queues 40 minutes.

Which day trips from Catania are actually worth it?

From Catania Centrale your best options are Siracusa (1 hour, €9 one way), Taormina, Giardini (40 minutes, €4.90), and Noto (1h40, €8.70). All use regional trains. No reservation needed. Tickets must be validated in the yellow machines on the platform, fines start at €55. I have been fined myself once. Noto is slow in train but the Baroque city is better than Modica for a single day. Skip Modica unless you have two days.

Is there a good day trip from Palermo by train?

Cefalù is the obvious winner. Regional trains from Palermo Centrale run every 30 minutes (50 minutes, €7.50). The beach is free, the cathedral costs €5.50, and the Rocca hike (2 hours round) is worth the heat if you start before 9am. Another solid option is Mondello beach by bus 806 (30 minutes, €1.40). Crowded in August but the water is clean. Skip Monreale unless you love mosaics, the train replacement bus is unreliable and the church is impressive but you see everything in 45 minutes.

How do I get to the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento?

Take the SAIS bus from Palermo (2 hours, €12.20 one way) or Catania (2h30, €13.50). The train takes 3 hours and costs the same but runs only 5 times a day. The archaeological park costs €13.50. Open 8:30 to 19:30 in July. The real heat hits at 11:00. Go straight to the Temple of Concordia first. There is a free water fountain near the entrance. Skip the museum next door unless you have 2 extra hours, the ticket is included but the air conditioning is broken in 2026.

Can I visit Mount Etna as a day trip without a car?

Yes but with limits. The AST bus from Catania départs at 8:15 from Piazza Giovanni XXIII (€6.60 one way, cash). It stops at Rifugio Sapienza at 1900 meters. From there the cable car costs €30 round trip to 2900 meters. The whole trip takes 9 hours. You will not reach the summit craters unless you book a guided 4x4 tour (€80 from the refuge). My verdict: skip the bus. Join a small group jeep tour from Catania (€70 including pickup and guide). The bus schedule means you wait two hours at the refuge for the return trip.

What about day trips from western Sicily (Trapani or Marsala)?

The Egadi Islands are the best day trip from Trapani. Hydrofoils to Favignana run 3 times daily (30 minutes, €18 return). Rent a bike (€12) and circle the island in 4 hours. The beach at Cala Rossa is free and the water is turquoise. Avoid Sunday in summer, every family from Palermo goes. From Marsala the bus to Selinunte archaeological park costs €7.50 (50 minutes). The park is half the size of Agrigento, less crowded, and you can walk among Greek temples without a guard. Entrance is €6.50. I prefer Selinunte over Agrigento.

Which day trips should I avoid?

Ragusa Ibla by train from Catania takes 2h40 with a change at Siracusa. The station is 5 km from the old town. The bus connection is slow. Do it only if you stay overnight. Similarly, Agrigento by train from Catania requires a change at Caltanissetta and takes 4 hours. The bus is faster and cheaper. The Scala dei Turchi real beach is closed in 2026 due to landslide danger, any tour promising access is lying.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book train tickets in advance for Sicily day trips?
No. Regional trains can be bought at the station machine up to 5 minutes before departure. For intercity trains (IC or Intercity Notte) you should reserve a seat if traveling on Friday or Sunday. Long-distance buses from Catania to Agrigento or Palermo sell out in August, book 2 days ahead at the AST or SAIS offices.
Are day trips from Sicily to mainland Italy possible?
Technically yes but not practical. The ferry from Messina to Villa San Giovanni takes 25 minutes (€5 walk-on) but then you need a train to Reggio Calabria (20 min, €2) or further. The highlight is the National Museum at Reggio (Riace bronzes, €8). Total trip from Catania is 3 hours each way. Worth it only if you love archaeology.
What is the best day trip for beach lovers?
From Catania take the train to Aci Trezza (15 minutes, €2.40). The beach is pebble but the cyclopean islands and free swimming platforms make it great. Lido dei Ciclopi is free. The train runs hourly. Bring water shoes.
Can I combine two towns in one day trip?
Noto and Modica together is possible with the 8:10 bus from Catania to Noto (1h20, €9.10), then a local bus from Noto to Modica (50 min, €4.50) and a bus back to Catania (2h, €11). You need to leave Catania by 7:30. I have done it twice. Tiring but doable.
How reliable is public transport in Sicily for day trips?
Regional trains are generally on time (90% of trips). Buses from AST and SAIS are more delayed, 15 to 30 minutes late in summer. The Palermo, Cefalù train is the most reliable. The Catania, Siracusa train has occasional cancellations, check the Trenitalia app same morning.
