Naples in One Day: A Realistic Plan
Is 1 day enough for Naples?
Yes, but only if you stay inside the historic center. One day is not enough for Pompeii, Herculaneum, or the Amalfi Coast. You need three days minimum for those. This plan focuses on what is walkable, cheap, and genuinely great. You will not see everything. You will leave wanting more. That is the point.
Day 1
1. Morning: Cappella Sansevero and the Historic Center (8:00 AM - 12:30 PM)
Start at 8:00 AM. Walk to Cappella Sansevero (Via Francesco De Sanctis 19). The line starts at 8:15 even though they open at 9:00. Arrive at 8:20. You will wait 15 minutes. Skip the online ticket, it costs EUR 2 more and has the same queue. Entry is EUR 12 for adults. Inside are the Veiled Christ and the Anatomical Machines. Yes, they are worth the hype. Give it 40 minutes.
At 9:15 walk to Piazza San Domenico Maggiore. Have a coffee at Caffe San Domenico (EUR 1.20 standing). Then take Via Benedetto Croce, the main strip of Spaccanapoli. This straight road cuts the old city in half. Walk east for 15 minutes. You will pass San Gregorio Armeno, the street of nativity scenes. The shops open at 10:00. Do not buy anything here unless it is under EUR 10. Most are tourist traps.
At 10:30 visit the Naples National Archaeological Museum (Piazza Museo Nazionale 19). Book your ticket online the night before. It costs EUR 18. The Farnese Bull and the Alexander Mosaic are on the first floor. The Secret Cabinet (erotic frescoes from Pompeii) is on the second floor. Give it 90 minutes. Leave by 12:15.
2. Lunch: Pizza at Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba (12:30 PM - 1:30 PM)
Walk 5 minutes to Via Port'Alba 18. This is the oldest pizzeria in Naples, open since 1738. A Margherita costs EUR 6. A Marinara costs EUR 5. Eat it standing at the counter. Do not sit unless you want a EUR 2 cover charge. Do not order pasta. This is Naples. You eat pizza for lunch, not pasta. Drink a 0.33L beer for EUR 3. Total for one person: about EUR 10.
3. Early Afternoon: Underground Naples and a Walk on Via Toledo (1:30 PM - 4:00 PM)
Walk to Piazza Dante (5 minutes). Enter Napoli Sotterranea at Via Dei Tribunali 162. The guided tour runs every hour. Last entry at 3:30 PM. It costs EUR 11. The tour lasts 70 minutes. You walk 35 meters down into ancient Greek and Roman aqueducts. It is dark, cool, and quiet. Wear closed shoes. Do not skip it.
At 3:00 PM exit and walk 10 minutes up Via Toledo. This is the shopping street. Pop into Galleria Umberto I on your right. Look up at the glass dome. Take a photo. Do not buy anything. Walk to Piazza del Plebiscito. It is big, white, and empty. The Royal Palace is in front of you. Do not go inside. The ticket is EUR 12 and the rooms are boring compared to the street life.
4. Late Afternoon: Castel dell'Ovo and a Seaside Aperitivo (4:00 PM - 6:30 PM)
Walk to the waterfront (10 minutes). Castel dell'Ovo is at Via Partenope. Entrance is free. Climb the towers for a view of the bay and Vesuvius. Give it 30 minutes. Then walk along the seafront promenade. At 5:30 PM sit at Terrazza Calabritto (Via Calabritto 13). Order a Spritz (EUR 7) or a glass of Falanghina (EUR 6). The snacks are free and include olives, chips, and little pizzas. Do not eat before dinner.
5. Evening: Dinner at Sorbillo and Gelato (7:00 PM - 9:00 PM)
Walk back to Via Dei Tribunali (15 minutes). Gino Sorbillo is at number 32. Expect a 20 minute wait even at 7 PM. The pizza is worth it. Order the Margherita Extra (EUR 8) or the Diavola (EUR 9). One pizza per person is enough. Drink water. Total: EUR 15 with a drink.
At 8:30 PM walk to Gelateria della Scimmia (Via Carità 46). One scoop in a cup costs EUR 3. The flavor is Fior di Latte or Pistachio. Do not choose both. Eat it walking back to your hotel.
Where to stay for this itinerary
Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Quarter): EUR 80 - 120 per night for a double room. You are 5 minutes from Via Toledo. It is noisy until midnight. That is the point.
Centro Storico (Historic Center): EUR 100 - 150 per night. You are on Spaccanapoli. Everything is walkable. Book a room with double glazing.
Chiaia (upscale): EUR 130 - 200 per night. Quieter, cleaner, but 20 minutes on foot from the historic core. Good for sleep, less for atmosphere.
Practical tips
Napoli Artecard: buy the 3 day version online for EUR 21. It covers the Archaeological Museum, Cappella Sansevero (discount), and unlimited metro and bus. You will save EUR 6.
Do not drive. Parking costs EUR 30 per day. Traffic is a mess. ZTL zones (limited traffic) will get you a EUR 80 fine by mail.
Skip the funicular to Vomero unless you have 90 minutes to kill. The view is nice. The line is not.
Watch for pickpockets on the metro line 1 and on Spaccanapoli at 2 PM. Keep your phone in a front pocket.
Do not eat at a restaurant that has a picture menu in English and a man standing outside. Walk away.
Book nothing in advance except the Archaeological Museum ticket. Everything else is first come first served.
Water in Naples is free from public fountains (fontanelle). They are everywhere. Fill your bottle.
The metro runs until 11 PM. After that, taxis cost EUR 12 for a 10 minute ride.
