Spain-Italy border checks: the practical picture
Spain has formally asked Italy to end the selective border checks on people arriving from Spain by air and sea, according to ANSA. Italy introduced the checks after suspending its Schengen arrangements with Spain following the arrival of thousands of migrants at Ceuta. Interior ministers held an emergency video call on Tuesday.
What does that mean for you? If you are flying from Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, Valencia or any other Spanish city to Italy, expect possible passport and ID controls on arrival. The same applies to ferries from Spain to Italian ports. These are not full border closures, but they are real checks that can create queues.
Carry your passport or national ID card. A driving licence is not enough. If you have a short connection in Italy, build in extra time. The checks are being described as selective, so not everyone will be stopped, but you should assume you might be.
Madrid's request does not mean the checks are over. Italy has not announced, according to the ANSA report, when the suspension will be lifted. If your trip is flexible, check the news closer to departure.
If you are planning to start in Rome or Milan, add the possible border wait to your first day. The rest of your itinerary is unlikely to be affected, since the checks target arrivals from Spain, not internal Italian travel.
The bigger lesson is to treat the Schengen area as changeable. On paper you can cross internal borders without a stamp, but during a migration crisis member states can reintroduce controls with little notice. Carry documents and stay patient.
